Hello! We’re Johnny and Elena, a couple married for over two decades with four wonderful kids. Since April 2015, we’ve dedicated our lives to serving as missionaries. Currently, we are pioneering a community church in the Northern region of the Philippines.
Our community, Pongian, is home to a diverse group of people who have relocated from different parts of the Philippines in search of work. As a result, various tribes are represented here, creating a rich cultural mix. At the same time, the community faces many spiritual and practical challenges and needs.
We are here to lead people to Christ and help them to grow in their faith in the context of a local church.
We also aim to address the most urgent practical needs of the families and children in our community, including improving nutrition and supporting education.
Some challenges in our community include:
· Weather: The rainy season between June and November makes finding work difficult.
· Financial: Many individuals face long working hours and low wages.
· Cultural: Challenges include reliance on children by parents, tribal divisions, and a pervasive poverty mindset.
· Family: Parents often work away from home, leaving youth unsupervised, contributing to broken family structures.
· Spiritual: While strong religious beliefs exist, many lack a personal relationship with Jesus.
· Vices: Various harmful habits and behaviors negatively impact the community such as alcohol abuse.
Some ways we are addressing these challenges include:
· Spiritual: We preach the gospel, focusing on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
· Education: We support children’s education to help them secure higher-paying employment in the future. This includes a planned school sponsorship program with daily lunches.
· Community Building: We work to foster relationships within the community, connecting people to the church and living alongside them to build trust.
· Family: Our youth ministry supplements parents who cannot be at home, offering guidance and support.
· Storm Season Relief: We provide food distribution to assist those affected during the storm season.
Our core activities include:
· House-to-house evangelism and discipleship.
· Food relief efforts.
· Establishing and maintaining a church presence in the community, now having a permanent building.
· Sunday church services.
· Weekly youth services.
· Weekly prayer meetings.
· Providing community family support including Christian weddings, funerals, child dedications, and participation in birthdays and other celebrations.
· Plans to create a program that helps children attend school and have basic nutrition.
· Plans to take our youth on a mission trip.
Upcoming ministry projects and expansions:
· Launch a scholarship program by supporting 10 students to attend school, marking the beginning of our educational scholarship initiative.
· Expand our building to accommodate the growing congregation, as we are reaching capacity.
· Organize a youth mission trip to share the Gospel, in collaboration with local churches in other regions of the Philippines.
As a family, we are also facing key financial challenges. These include:
· The need to provide for the basic needs of our family including medical, food, housing, and transportation.
· The desire to provide education for our four kids.
In summary, we are pioneering the first local church in Pongian, Northern Philippines, where we are addressing both spiritual and practical needs in a diverse community. Through evangelism, youth ministry, and community support, we’ve seen lives transformed and are working to expand our impact. As a family, we are seeking your financial support to continue our mission and grow our ministry in the region.
